Can piracy be stopped?
While ships are dealing with pirates off the coast of Somalia, the music and film industry is dealing with another type of pirate. Digital pirates. In 2007 the entertainment industry generated a trade surplus of $13.6 billion. "Imagine what those numbers would be if we could rein in piracy, " said Steven Sodergergh.(http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/05/01/wolverine.movie.piracy/index.html). But can this piracy really be stopped? The FBI says they are "doing everything we can to keep up with the learning curve of technology, hopefully just as fast as our criminal subjects." The issue is that it is global. Piracy cannot be stopped by just one country, because many of these movies are being hosted on foreign websites, where it is impossible for the FBI to enforce anything. So until the whole world gets together to try and stop this illegal sharing of music and movies, any efforts will only slow the vast widespread sharing of this content.
